LES ORIGINES DE L’IMPERIAL PALACE
L ‘Imperial Palace à Annecy est un monument historique . Il ouvra ses portes il y a plus d’un siècle, en 1913. Une conception de Thomas Ruphy dans l’esprit belle époque sur commande de René Leyvraz.
En effet plusieurs projets de construction d’un hôtel de luxe sont à l’étude vers la fin du 19ème siècle. Dont celui de Saturnin Favre qui consiste à repousser une partie du lac sur une surface de douze hectares, afin de construire un casino et d’un grand hôtel.
L’imperial palace qui ouvrit ses portes le 14 juillet 1913 , est le résultat d’une partie de ce projet.
L’architecture du bâtiment s’inspire de celle du chateau français du 17ème siècle, et de celle plusieurs autres des établissements de luxe du 19e siècle, dont la particularité est d’avoir un corps central encadré par deux ailes symétriques terminées par des pavillons. Les différentes parties sont distinguées grâce à des toitures différentes
Après son lancement, l’Imperial Palace attire la haute société du monde. De Churchill au roi du Maroc , en passant par Piaf et Chaplin , l’édifice fait de la ville un lieu huppé .
The Imperial Palace historic monument in Annecy. It opened its doors over a century ago in 1913. A design by Thomas Ruphy in the Belle Epoque spirit, commissioned by René Leyvraz. In fact, several projects for the construction of a luxury hotel were being studied towards the end of the 19th century.
Including that of Saturnin Favre which consists in pushing back part of the lake on an area of twelve hectares, in order to build a casino and a large hotel. Imperial palace which opened its doors on July 14, 1913, is the result of part of this project.
The architecture of the Imperial Palace is inspired by that of the 17th century French castle, and that of several other 19th century luxury establishments, whose particularity is to have a central body framed by two symmetrical wings terminated by pavilions. The different parts are distinguished by different roofs.
After its launch, the Imperial Palace attracts high society from the world. From Churchill to the King of Morocco, via Piaf and Chaplin, the building makes the city an upscale place.
LE DECLIN DE L’IMPERIAL PALACE
Malheureusement la guerre de 1914 à 1918 vient tout arrêté.
Durant la guerre, entre 1943 et 1946, L’Imperial Palace sert d’hôpital militaire aux Allemands, puis de quartier général aux résistants après la libération d’août 1944 et enfin, de centre de triage des prisonniers de guerre français rapatriés.
Vers les années 50, les premiers signes de déclin se manifestent à l’Imperial Palace. La clientèle n’est plus au rendez-vous. Le 8 septembre 1965, il ferme définitivement ses portes. Les propriétaires décident de le vendre en appartement afin de garder l’hotel à flot. Mais la ville s’y oppose et se porte acquéreur de l’ensemble du site afin de préserver ce lieu exceptionnel. Le 20 janvier 1975, le parc est officiellement ouvert au public.
En 1981 dans la nuit du 25 au 26 octobre, un violent incendie le détruit en grande partie.

Around the 1950s, the first signs of decline appeared. The clientele is no longer there. On September 8, 1965, it definitively closed its doors. The owners decide to sell it as an apartment in order to keep the hotel afloat. But the city opposes it and acquires the entire site to preserve this exceptional place. On January 20, 1975, the park was officially opened to the public. Dans le Palace détruit par un incendie en 1981, les élus se réuniront pour y boire dit-on le champagne plusieurs années de suite. En effet afin de conserver sa licence de débit de boisson, il était nécessaire qu’il soit constaté par un huissier qu’on y servait toujours de l’alcool. ce dernier dressait un procès verbal attestant que l’activité de débit de boisson y était maintenue. (Source l’Essor Savoyard, 2010). La ville recherche alors des éventuels acquéreurs pour exploiter à nouveau l’Imperial Palace.

L’Impérial Palace renaît de ses cendres
La réouverture
En 1984, les recherches menées par Bernard Bosson, l’un des Maires les plus emblématiques d’Annecy , s’avèrent fructueuses puisque le Groupe Allemand Jung semble être l’acquéreur tant attendu. Le contrat est définitivement signé entre Annecy et les principaux actionnaires du Groupe Jung en 1987. Le chantier commencera le 17 juin 1988. Pendant les années de réhabilitations qui suivront, le Groupe Jung se retirera au profit du Groupe Hopf.
Le 15 décembre 1990, après 2 ans de rénovation, l’Impérial Palace renaît de ses cendres en un complexe hôtelier haut de gamme à triple vocation : Centre de Congrès, Hôtel et Casino.
Une polémique agite la ville, du fait de la présence de motifs en forme de croix gammée sur certains fer forgés du 3e étage, rappelant l’occupation de l’hôtel par des soldats allemands lors de la seconde guerre mondiale. Mais ces derniers dataient de la construction de l’Impérial Palace en 1913.
L’Impérial Palace est aujourd’hui géré par le groupe , qui est un groupe originaire de la Haute-Savoie. L’hôtel accueille les plus gros événement de la ville dont le plus important est le Festival International du Film d’animation qui se tient chaque année à Annecy. Plus de détail sur le MIFAici
The reopening
In 1984, research carried out by Bernard Bosson, one of the most emblematic Mayors of Annecy, proved fruitful since the German Group Jung seems to be the long-awaited buyer. The contract was definitively signed between Annecy and the main shareholders of the Jung Group in 1987. The works will start on June 17, 1988. During the years of rehabilitation that will follow, the Jung Group will retire in favor of the Hopf Group. On December 15, 1990, after 2 years of renovation, the Imperial Palace rose from the ashes into an upscale hotel complex with a triple vocation: Congress center, Hotel and Casino. A controversy agitates the city, because of the presence of patterns in the shape of a swastika on some forged irons of the 3rd floor of the imperial palace, recalling the occupation of the hotel by German soldiers during the Second World War. But these dates back to the construction of the Imperial Palace in 1913.
The Imperial Palace is today managed by the PVG group, which is a group from Haute-Savoie. The hotel hosts the biggest events in the city, the most important of which is the International Animation Film Festival which is held each year in Annecy. More details on MIFA here
